The Service No.1 Khouri (Kukri) is the most common and favored among Gurkha soldiers. Officially issued to Gurkhas in the UK Regiment, this Khouri (Kukri) is provided to all British Gurkha soldiers upon enlistment and accompanies them throughout their military service. Regularly inspected by an officer, this Khouri (Kukri) is typically used during parades and duties. Each Khouri includes two pockets on the back of the sheath: one holds a blunt steel called "chakmak" for sharpening the blade or striking a spark from flint, and the other, a small knife known as "karda" for skinning small game like rabbits. The notch (Kaura or Kaudi) near the blade's hilt allows blood to drip off the blade, keeping the hilt clean. It also serves to catch and neutralize an enemy's sword.
Specifications include a 10.5-inch (26cm) polished blade, a 5.5-inch (14cm) buffalo horn handle fixed to the blade, an upper spine of 11mm, a lower spine of 9mm, a belly width of 1.9 inches, and a handle circumference of 3.6 inches. The steel's hardness is rated at 22-25 RC on the spine, 45-46 RC on the belly, and 58-60 RC on the edge. The sheath is cotton-covered in buffalo leather and features double frogs and leather loops for belt attachment.
